Longines has a habit of digging into its archives and pulling out absolute gold. Case in point: the newly unveiled Legend Diver 59. If you’re a vintage enthusiast who loves the DNA of the brand’s iconic 1959 diver but demands modern, bulletproof performance on the wrist, this one’s for you.

Longines is throwing it back to the exact 42-mm case proportions of the original 1959 classic. No down-sizing here—just pure, unadulterated heritage.

The Aesthetic: Pure 1959 DNA

Right out of the gate, you’ll notice the signature dual crowns and that gorgeous internal rotating bezel. Longines actually pioneered the internal bezel back in 1936, later moving it under the glass to protect it from underwater knocks. On the new ’59 edition, it operates via the screw-in crown at 2 o’clock, sporting a matching grained black finish and metallic indexes that scream mid-century utility.

Then there’s the dial. It’s a textured, grained black masterpiece protected by a heavily domed sapphire crystal that mimics vintage plexiglass, minus the scratches. The hands and markers are coated in “light Old Radium” Super-LumiNova®. It gives you that warm, faux-patina look without sacrificing nighttime readability. And yes, the running seconds hand gets a luminescent tip—because if you’re actually diving with this thing, you need to know your watch hasn’t stopped in the dark.

Modern Muscle Under the Hood

Don’t let the old-school looks fool you, though. This isn’t a delicate vintage piece you need to baby. Under the dial beats the exclusive Longines Calibre L888.6.

  • Silicon Power: It features a silicon balance-spring, meaning it’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and entirely unbothered by temperature swings or the magnetic fields of your daily tech.

  • Anti-Magnetic: Magnetic resistance is a staggering ten times greater than the standard ISO 764 benchmark.

  • Weekend-Proof: A hefty 72-hour power reserve means you can set it down on Friday night and pick it up Monday morning without skipping a beat.

More importantly, the entire fully assembled watch is COSC chronometer-certified, guaranteeing top-tier accuracy. It’s also fully ISO 6425 certified as a true diving instrument, bragging a serious water resistance rating of 30 bar (300 meters). That’s a massive upgrade from the 120 meters of the 1959 original.

On the Wrist

Longines is shipping this version on a beautifully integrated stainless-steel Milanese mesh bracelet. It’s incredibly flexible, sits comfortably on the wrist, and features a micro-adjustable, double-folding safety clasp to dial in that perfect fit.

But if mesh isn’t your vibe, or you just want to change things up for summer, they’re throwing a black rubber “tropic” style strap into the box, too.

It’s punchy. It’s historic. It gracefully walks the line between a mid-century safe queen and a modern daily wearer. Longines knows exactly what collectors want, and with the Legend Diver 59, they delivered.
