Omega Planet Ocean PyeongChang 2018

Limited to just 2018 pieces, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M ‘Pyeongchang 2018’ is a watch that transcends its commemorative roots. It is built as a serious tool for the deep, powered by Omega’s Master Chronometer technology, yet destined to live as a collectible reminder of a rare moment when sport, time, and watchmaking converged.

For a watch to be more than the sum of its parts, it needs a story.  Not marketing fluff, not contrived backstory, but a genuine narrative thread that ties it to a broader human endeavour.  Omega’s connection to the Olympic Games is one of the rare examples in watchmaking where the story is not only true, it is historic.

This is a relationship that began in 1932, in Los Angeles, when Omega became the first company entrusted to time the Games with a single chronograph and a team of watchmakers.  From that moment, Omega was not just making watches—it was shaping the way the world recorded the finest fractions of human achievement. Almost a century later, that connection continues, not just in stopwatches and sensors, but in watches you can wear every day.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M “Pyeongchang 2018” is one such watch.  At first glance, it is a professional diver with some well-chosen colours and a commemorative engraving.  But it belongs to a lineage that spans nearly 90 years of precision under pressure—a lineage that begins on a running track and ends on your wrist.

The First Tick of a Legacy (1932–1960s)

Before we get to 2018, it is worth remembering where Omega’s Olympic story begins.  In 1932, the company supplied a single watchmaker and 30 chronographs to time every event at the Los Angeles Games.  It was a feat of logistics and precision that helped usher in a new era of scientific accuracy in sports.  For decades afterward, Omega would introduce innovations tied directly to the Games: photo-finish cameras, electronic touchpads for swimming, pressure-sensitive start guns.  The brand was not just a supplier, it was redefining what timing meant in competition.

While these innovations rarely translated into commercial watches at the time, they built Omega’s reputation for reliability and precision under the most intense scrutiny imaginable: the Olympic stage.

From Stopwatches to Wristwatches – The Birth of Olympic Editions (1970s–2000s)

By the 1970s and 80s, the Olympic partnership had become something more than equipment.  Omega began creating special wristwatches for collectors and fans of the Games.  Early examples were usually variations of existing Seamaster or Speedmaster models, with caseback engravings or unique dial markings.

These watches were often modest in their commemorative nature, yet they tapped into something powerful: the desire to own a piece of an event defined by fleeting moments of brilliance.  Over time, the tradition grew, with Omega producing dedicated collections for each Games.  Some were thematic novelties, others true evolutions of existing professional watches.

By the time Pyeongchang won its bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, Omega’s reputation for tying its best-known tool watches to the Games was well-established.  This Planet Ocean is the continuation of that journey.

Planet Ocean 600M – A Diver for the Modern Era

The base watch is crucial to understand here.  The Planet Ocean line debuted in 2005 as Omega’s answer to a question no one was asking explicitly but many collectors were wondering: could Omega make a modern, no-compromise professional diver that would rival Rolex in toughness, engineering, and legitimacy?  The answer was yes.  With its 600-meter rating, helium escape valve, ceramic bezels, and co-axial calibers, the Planet Ocean quickly became the brand’s flagship dive watch.

The “Pyeongchang 2018” edition takes that tried-and-true platform and imbues it with subtle celebration.  The case is 43.5 mm of steel, substantial on the wrist but finely finished with brushed surfaces and polished bevels.  The unidirectional bezel is ceramic, as is the dial, polished to a rich blue sheen that shifts with light like the icy Korean winter sky.  Red accents on the bezel numerals and minute track give it an energetic pop, a visual echo of both the Olympic spirit and South Korea’s national colours.

The case flank bears “Pyeongchang 2018,” engraved in a quiet, confident script.  Flip it over, and the sapphire caseback reveals both the METAS-certified caliber 8900 and the Olympic Games logo etched into the glass. It is commemoration done without excess, designed to be worn beyond the fortnight of the Games.

Caliber 8900 – Precision Worthy of the Podium

A watch honouring the Olympics should, ideally, be about more than looks.  The caliber 8900 makes that argument convincingly.  Part of Omega’s new-generation movements, it pairs the co-axial escapement—an innovation designed to reduce friction and improve longevity—with METAS certification, a standard of testing that goes beyond COSC chronometer ratings.

Each watch is tested for resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, accuracy in multiple positions and temperatures, water resistance, and power reserve.  It is a level of scrutiny not far removed from the conditions Omega faces when timing a bobsleigh run or a 100-meter freestyle sprint.  The result is a movement that keeps pace with life’s unpredictable tempo, built to endure, and accurate enough to honour Omega’s roots in competitive timing.

Wearing the Games on Your Wrist

On the wrist, the Planet Ocean 600M “Pyeongchang 2018” feels like what it is: a serious, overbuilt diver first, a commemorative watch second.  At 43.5 mm, it is substantial but balanced, helped by the short, downward-angled lugs. The bracelet is solid, comfortable, with a clasp that includes an easy extension system—a practical nod to its professional diving origins.

What makes it compelling is that you don’t need to explain the watch to anyone.  The Olympic elements are quiet: colours, engravings, a logo under sapphire.  It avoids the trap of becoming a souvenir or novelty piece, remaining a genuine Planet Ocean in every respect, one you could hand down long after 2018 is a memory.

A Limited Edition With a Lineage

Omega has produced dozens of Olympic-themed watches over the decades, some charming, some forgettable. The best of them share a trait with the events they celebrate: they are not just about a single instant in time, but about enduring excellence.  The Planet Ocean 600M “Pyeongchang 2018” joins that short list.  It is a tool watch built to a high standard, tied to a story that stretches from Los Angeles 1932 to Pyeongchang 2018, and, inevitably, beyond.

It’s not the rarest, the smallest, or the most collectible Olympic Omega. But it might be one of the most honest.  A professional diver, built for the long haul, quietly commemorating a moment when the world came together to measure not time itself, but what we can achieve within it.
